How to become a good ordering of web solutions?

How much does an online store cost? How tall is a house? How heavy is a rock? To be able to get a real price estimate and a better picture of the process behind your new web solution, it's a good idea to set yourself prepared.

Get one more out of the first conversation with some preliminary work

Below we give you some tips to do a good preparatory work so that you get the most out of your first meeting with a possible collaborator. If this is your first time ordering a web solution, whether it is a webshop, a web application or a webpage, it is profitable to put some time and energy into a requirement specification. This will make the initial conversation with a potential partner far more productive, as it will save you time, as well as making both the price and time estimate will be more correct.

What is a claim specification?

A requirements specification is a document that tells something about the purpose of the web solution, and what it should contain, so that the supplier can get an understanding of what needs you as the ordering party have. Some solutions are purely informational, while others aim to inspire or sell products or services. The more you have thought through in advance, the easier it will be for the provider to make a realistic plan for the way forward with you.

What should you consider before the first conversation with the provider?

Feel free to create a checklist containing essential information about the desired solution. Who do you want to reach out to and why? What do you want to convey and in what way? Ask yourself: What is the goal of the solution? What challenges are you going to solve, and for whom?

One thing is that the website should look good when potential customers enter it, another thing is that it must also be functional to work with and edit the content to be presented. It is therefore advisable to also think about how the current CMS (content management system, i.e. the website's admin page) works and what challenges you have today. Does the solution have any limitations that make it difficult to work with the content? Are there any features you guys are missing in today's admin?

How should the solution be designed?

Then you should make up some thoughts about what the site should look like. Do you need design templates for several different parts of the page? Should the solution include forms, and should you send out newsletters? Is it appropriate to have a blog or inspiration section on the page to write longer articles and create engaging content? Do you need a login portal to “My Site” or similar, and if so, what type of content should be located here?

In addition, it is important to consider whether the solution needs integrations. Put another way: should the solution talk to other systems? For example, an online store may need to talk to warehouse, checkout, and billing systems.

Once you have thought through and answered these questions, you have a good basis for creating a claim specification, which in turn will enable the supplier to come up with an estimate of price and time spent.
