FIRST LEGO League

First-class websites are no game!

FIRST Scandinavia is an old customer of ours in Increo. They are a foundation that wants to help more people choose science education. They do this through concepts that create learning and coping experiences for children and young people. One of them is the FIRST LEGO League.

FIRST came to us with an over 10 years old website, which Increo created in its time -- in 2008. It no longer held up in today's world, and they needed a new solution for the FIRST LEGO League tournaments. The solution had to have far better usability, even more functionality — and work brilliantly on mobile. Because this is something completely different from a normal website.

There is no equivalent, so everything had to be tailored. We got the delivery on time for the season, and today are proud of our website. Now we look forward to making it even better in the years to come.

The challenge and the customer's desire

The mission for FIRST LEGO League is one of the more technically demanding we have done. Fortunately, we like a challenge.

This website is just as much a tool, both during the FIRST LEGO League tournament itself and otherwise throughout the year. That in itself meant requirements for a variety of features.

In addition, the system is role-driven: Teams, supervisors, project managers and judges can log in — all with their own functionality. The system also has to cope with the high traffic during the tournaments.

Here's how we solved it

The first thing we did was break down the original website. We took all of the functionality with us, added even more, and gave it a modern wrapper. Increo stood for design, graphics and interaction design.

Here the frontend is really just the tip of the iceberg -- the big job lies beneath the surface. Contestants and judges can log in from their mobile and adjust data along the way. This information is calculated and stitched together. Results should be continuously displayed on the big screen.

The customer has been happy, and has a huge amount of professional knowledge. It has made the collaboration extra exciting for us and we have been challenged every step of the way. From the start, we set up to a dynamic solution that was open to continuous customizations. We are happy about that today — new needs have constantly emerged along the way.

Good communication is extremely important in such processes, and cooperation with Increo has been good.
