Carpet up for trondelag-teater.no

Trøndelag Teater is an institutional theatre in Trondheim, and Norway's largest regional theatre. We are really proud to work with the theatre, which we have been collaborating with since 2010. In 2018, we launched a new version of trondelag-teater.no

The purpose

The purpose of the project was several. With an updated publishing solution, there was the greatest need to renew the frontend and the visual design. The site bore the mark of being designed in a different era, both in terms of resolution and the size things were designed in, as the screens at this time had lower resolution. In addition, there was a desire for the theater to be better on universal design. We also wanted a website that was easier to use, with intuitive navigation and clear “call to action” buttons, urging users to take action. Whether it was reading more about the performances, buying tickets, learning more about the cast or following the theatre on social media. Finally, we wanted to make the theater more visual and better adapted for the devices on which you can visit the theater.

An iterative process

We developed the new design through an iterative process, where we worked closely with the customer. Our designer set up a prototype in the design tool Invision. Subsequently, the design, through several working meetings with people in different roles at the theater present, was adjusted and optimized on an ongoing basis. Along the way, we tested various concepts, before landing the final solution.

New frontend technology

Early in the project, we decided to adopt relatively new technology for the front end/interface; React.js. This is a modern JavaScript library, perfect for building dynamic user interfaces. A frontend developed with React is “detached” from the backend, where the contents of the solution are made available via an API. One of the advantages of a react frontend is that it is component-based, which allows you to reuse different views, such as the theater program view, that are used in several places in the solution. This allows for an efficient and smooth development process.

Integration with ticketing solution

For a better user experience, we also chose to develop a closer integration with the theater ticketing solution from Ticketmaster. We wanted users to find all of the information about performances and tickets on the theatre's own website, so that only the actual ticket purchase is made at Ticketmaster.

The result

Trondelag-teater.no is one of the theatre's most important channels to the public, and has now become a modern platform for information, presentation and ticket sales.
